The elegance of herringbone, reimagined

Herringbone is the zig-zag of short boards you find in classic European parquetry. Each board meets the next at a right angle, so the floor reads as a pattern rather than a run of lines.

That pattern gives a room texture and movement. It sits as easily under a modern sofa as it does in a period home, and light falls differently across each row.

Our hybrid herringbone keeps the look and changes what's underneath: short planks with a rigid SPC core, a bonded underlay and a click system, so you get the parquetry pattern with the everyday ease of hybrid.

Why choose hybrid herringbone?

The look of parquetry, with a floor that's made for everyday life.

The design

  • A distinctive pattern The zig-zag gives a room texture and direction that straight planks don't.
  • Classic or contemporary Herringbone suits period homes and clean modern interiors alike.
  • A real timber look A matt finish embossed in register, so the texture follows the printed grain.
  • Seven colours From pale Alaskan and Grey Oak to warm Spotted Gum.

The everyday

  • 100% waterproof planks Spills and mopping won't swell the planks. Water left standing can still get in at joints, so wipe it up.
  • Hard-wearing surface A 5 µm urethane ceramic layer resists scuffs and stains. It isn't scratch-proof: use felt pads.
  • Quiet and comfortable A sound-reduction underlay is bonded to every plank, with an AAAC 5 Star acoustic rating.
  • Easy care Vacuum and a damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Nothing to sand, oil or polish.

What's inside a herringbone plank

Five layers, the same build as our 9 mm hybrid planks, cut to a short herringbone size.

  1. Top coating

Multi-melanin with ceramic beads, for durability and stain resistance.

  2. Wear layer

Hardened vinyl that takes scuffs and abrasion, with a 5 µm urethane ceramic layer.

  3. Decorative film

A high-definition print that gives each colour its timber grain.

  4. SPC rigid core

    100% phthalate-free and dimensionally stable.

  5. Bonded underlay

Reduces footstep noise and smooths small subfloor bumps.

Each plank locks into the next with a licensed Uniclic click system, without glue.

Hybrid herringbone or timber herringbone?

Both give you the parquetry pattern. They suit different priorities, and neither is right for every home.

Hybrid herringbone Timber herringbone

Hybrid herringbone figures come from our ETF technical sheet. Timber herringbone varies by product and installer, so its column is general.

Room by room

Hybrid herringbone suits most rooms in the house. Here's where to check with us first.

  • Living and dining

    Suitable

Felt pads under furniture keep the surface looking new.

  • Bedrooms

    Suitable

The bonded underlay keeps it quiet and warmer underfoot.

  • Hallways and entries

    Suitable

The pattern leads the eye along a hallway. A mat at the door catches grit.

  • Kitchens

    Suitable

Waterproof planks handle spills; don't fix heavy cabinetry on top of a floating floor.

  • Apartments

    Check first

Often suitable with the AAAC 5 Star underlay. Check your strata's rules first.

  • Bathrooms

    Not recommended

Not where there's a shower or floor drain: that needs a waterproof membrane system.

What's different about herringbone installation

Herringbone uses the same click system as our straight planks, but it is laid differently. It takes more planning, more cutting and more time, so every quote starts with a measure.

What we plan at the measure

  • The direction of the pattern and where the centre line runs
  • How the zig-zag meets doorways, hallways and other floors
  • The subfloor: flat to within 2 mm in any square metre, and dry
  • How much extra material your rooms need for the cuts

Why it costs more than straight planks

  • The pattern is set out from a measured centre line, not from a wall
  • Every edge row is cut at an angle, which takes time and creates offcuts
  • Short planks mean more pieces to lay per square metre
  • Doorways and transitions need careful fitting to keep the pattern aligned

Expansion gaps of 8–18 mm stay at every wall, hidden under skirting or scotia. Herringbone can't go over underfloor heating.

How we install it

  1. Free measure

We measure, bring samples and plan the direction of the pattern.

  2. Written quote

Flooring with the extra for cuts, preparation, trims and labour, itemised.

  3. Preparation

Old flooring removed, the subfloor levelled and the boxes left to settle for 48 hours.

  4. Setting out

We mark the centre line so the zig-zag runs true through the rooms.

  5. Installation

Planks clicked into the pattern, edges cut, then skirting or scotia fitted.

What hybrid herringbone costs

Herringbone usually costs more per square metre than straight-plank hybrid: the planks cost more, more of them are cut, and laying the pattern takes longer. Your written quote lists each item.

Hybrid herringbone questions

What is hybrid herringbone flooring?

Short hybrid planks (636 × 127 mm, 9 mm thick) laid in a zig-zag herringbone pattern. Each plank has a rigid SPC core, a printed timber look and an underlay bonded underneath, and they click together without glue.

Is hybrid herringbone more expensive than regular hybrid?

Usually, yes. The planks cost more, the pattern needs more cutting and extra material, and it takes longer to lay. We give you an itemised quote after a free measure.

Is herringbone suitable for small rooms?

Yes. The pattern works in small rooms and hallways too; the zig-zag draws the eye along the room. We'll suggest a direction at the measure.

Is hybrid herringbone waterproof?

The planks are rated 100% waterproof, so spills and mopping won't swell them. That covers the planks, not the whole floor: water left standing can get in at joints and edges, and it isn't for rooms with a shower or floor drain.

Is herringbone installation more complicated?

Yes. It's set out from a measured centre line, every edge is cut at an angle and there are more pieces per square metre. It uses the same click system as our straight planks, but takes more time and skill.

How do I clean hybrid herringbone?

Vacuum with a brush head or sweep, then a damp (not wet) mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Never use a steam mop, wax, polish, vinegar or bleach.

What's the difference between hybrid and engineered timber herringbone?

Engineered timber herringbone has a real timber top layer, so every block varies and it can usually be re-coated, but it isn't waterproof and usually costs more. Hybrid herringbone is a printed timber look on a waterproof core: easier to care for, but it can't be sanded.

Can hybrid herringbone go over tiles or underfloor heating?

Over sound, flat tiles, often yes: grout lines wider or deeper than 3 mm are filled first. It can't go over any underfloor heating.

Can I match herringbone with straight planks in other rooms?

Several colours come in both: Grey Oak, Lake Oak Light, New Zealand Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Alaskan Oak, American Oak and Natural Oak are also hybrid plank colours. Each colour page links to its plank version.

Do you have samples?

Yes. We bring samples to your free measure, and you can see herringbone in our Auburn showroom.
